A RARE HAT-TRICK

Smith achieved a feat that neither Ricky Ponting nor Michael Clarke managed throughout their decorated Test careers.

The incumbent Test skipper has registered his third consecutive 1,000-plus run calendar year at Test level - becoming just the second Australian in history to do so.

Matthew Hayden is the only other Australian batsman to have managed more than two consecutive years with 1,000 Test runs. He did so on five straight occasions between 2001 and 2005.

Smith’s three 1,000 Test run calendar years places him alongside Allan Border and Mark Taylor.

Only Hayden, Ponting and Clarke have managed more 1,000 Test run years than Smith, who has now reached four figures in 2014 (1,146 runs @ 81.85), 2015 (1,474 runs @ 73.70) and 2016 (1,014 runs @ 67.60*) - registering 15 centuries and 14 half centuries along the way.

In total, Australians have scored 1,000 runs in a calendar years 40 times, spread between 21 batsmen.

These are the Australian batsmen with most 1,000 Test run calendar years:

Five: Matthew Hayden (2001-2005), Ricky Ponting (2002-2003, 2005-2006, 2008)

Four: Michael Clarke (2008-2009, 2012-2013)

Three: Steve Smith (2014-2016), Allan Border (1979, 1986-1986), Mark Taylor (1989, 1993, 1998)

Two: David Warner (2014-2015), Simon Katich (2008-2009)

One: Don Bradman (1948), Justin Langer (2004), Damien Martyn (2004), Bob Simpson (1964), Bill Lawry (1964), David Boon (1993), Greg Blewett (1997), Dean Jones (1989), Clem Hill (1902), Michael Slater (1999), Mark Waugh (1998), Adam Voges (2015), Kim Hughes (1979).
